Winter is a time when safe driving and well-maintained vehicles take on even greater importance. “Failure to keep in proper lane or running off the road (28%) and “driving too fast for conditions (22%) are two of the most frequent driver behaviors that can cause an accident, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

To help you avoid potentially dangerous situations, heed these winter driving safety tips compiled by the Insurance Information Institute.

  • Give yourself enough time to arrive at your destination. Trips can take longer during winter than at other times of the year, especially if you encounter stormy conditions or icy roads.
  • Bring a cellphone so those awaiting your arrival can get in touch with you, or you can notify them if you are running late. Avoid the temptation to use the phone while driving, as it can be a dangerous distraction. Pull over first.
  • Avoid other distractions. Driving while texting, changing CDs, eating or having serious talks with passengers is risky when roadways are dry, and even more so in icy conditions.
  • Drive slowly because accelerating, stopping and turning all take longer on snow-covered roads.
  • Leave more distance than usual between your vehicle and the one just ahead of you, giving yourself at least 10 seconds to come to a complete stop.
  • Avoid sudden stops and quick direction changes.
  • Be careful when driving over bridges and roads rarely exposed to sunlight. They often are icy when other areas are not.
  • Do not activate cruise control when driving on slippery roads.
  • Keep your windshield and windows clear. In cold weather states, keep a snow brush or scraper in your vehicle at all times.
  • Do not warm up a vehicle in an enclosed area, such as a garage. Exhaust fumes can accumulate quickly and/or leak into your home, so open the garage door before starting your car.
  • Be sure to keep your gas tank full. Stormy weather or traffic delays may force you to change routes or turn back.
  • Keep your tires properly inflated and remember that good tread on your ties is essential to safe winter driving.
  • Monitor the weather at your destination before beginning your trip. If conditions are too hazardous, just stay home.
  • Don’t take chances. While 4-wheel drive will aid in getting you places, it does not help you stop and turn on icy roads.
