Each year, 30 million to 35 million American families celebrate the holiday with a fresh, farm-grown Christmas tree, according to the National Christmas Tree Association.

Get your perfect Christmas tree home safely by following these tips:

1. Take measurements and know the size of the tree you can accommodate in your home and to transport on your vehicle.

2. Take a tarp, old blanket or heavy plastic sheets to protect your vehicle. Also, grab something to secure the tree to your vehicle – rope, twine and ratchet-style tie-downs or bungee cords.

3. If the tree you purchase does not come wrapped in netting, wrap it in a blanket or tarp. Be sure to leave the netting on the tree for transporting.

4. Cover the roof of your vehicle with a tarp or blanket to avoid paint scratches. If you are hauling the tree in the back of your SUV or minivan, lay down a blanket or tarp to protect your interior from tree sap.

5. Position the tree in the right direction. To keep your tree stable and avoid wind damage when driving, center the tree and arrange it so that the stump end faces the front of your vehicle.

6. Secure the tree to your vehicle. If you have a roof rack, secure the tree from where the branches start to its tip, with bungee cords or rope. If your vehicle does not have a roof rack, open all your vehicle doors – not the windows – then tie the tree snugly to the roof with rope.

7. Drive slow and easy once you get back on the road.

Have a safe and happy holiday!
