There are six violations that cost drivers over $1,000 a year in rate hikes and have the biggest impact on auto insurance premiums. They are:

  • Reckless driving – $1,038 average increase
  • Driving with a suspended license – $1,080 average increase
  • Driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs – $1,100 average increase
  • Racing – $1,131 average increase
  • Hit and run – $1,212 average increase

Depending on the city or state, these offenses could increase rates by 36 percent or by 383 percent, according to The Zebra, an insurance comparison site headquartered in Austin, Texas.
