Tips to Prepare for Halloween

With Halloween around the corner, it’s time to start thinking of ways to get ready for trick-or-treaters. Handing out candy is fun, but you can be held liable for anything that happens on your property. Prepare your home for the little ghosts and witches coming to ring your doorbell on the 31st using these five tips.

  1. Check your walkways. Make sure your walkways are clear of any tripping hazards. Excited children may not be paying attention to the ground, and small hazards like toys or leaves can make them trip.
  2. Clear your yard of debris. Children don’t always follow the path when they’re excited and they may cut through your yard. Leaves, sticks, and stones can be slippery and dangerous. Comb through your yard with a rake and dispose of the debris before Halloween night.
  3. Check your lights. Your porch and yard should be well-lit to reduce the chance of falls or accidents. Check to make sure your lightbulbs don’t need replacing and there is enough light in front of your home.
  4. Be aware of allergens. Many children are allergic to common candy ingredients, such as nuts. Consider separating candy with nuts or having some non candy treats to help avoid allergic reactions in children who may not notice the labels.
  5. Secure your pets. Your furry friend may be well-behaved, but Halloween can be overwhelming to animals with constant knocking and opening of doors. Secure your pets so they do not escape and possibly hurt someone – or themselves.
